چکیده
28 29 The subsurface heat buildup in the western tropical Pacific and the recharge phase in 30 equatorial heat content are intrinsic elements of El Niño-Southern Oscillation, leading to changes in 31 zonal wind stress, sea surface temperature and thermocline tilt that characterize the growing and 32 mature phases of El Niño (EN) events. Here we use ocean and atmosphere reanalyses and numerical 33 simulations to study the impact on subsequent EN episodes of a sudden discharge or recharge in 34 ocean heat content during these phases. We found that the timing and magnitude of the events are 35 not substantially affected by the phase at which a sudden recharge is prescribed, but instead they 36 largely depend on the phase at which a major discharge is imposed. The different response to the 37 phase of recharges and discharges confirms the non-linear relationship between the intensity of the 38 subsurface heat buildup and the magnitude and timing of subsequent EN episodes. 39 40 4

Timing of subsurface heat magnitude for the growth of El Niño events

متن کاملSensitivity of El Niño intensity and timing to preceding subsurface heat magnitude
Despite extensive ongoing efforts on improving the long-term prediction of El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the predictability in state-of-the-art operational schemes remains limited by factors such as the spring barrier and the influence of atmospheric winds. Recent research suggests that the 2014/15 El Niño (EN) event was stalled as a result of an unusually strong basin-wide easterly wind burst ...
متن کاملSubsurface ocean temperature indices for Central-Pacific and Eastern-Pacific types of El Niño and La Niña events
Subsurface ocean temperature indices are developed to identify two distinct types of tropical Pacific warming (El Niño) and cooling (La Niña) events: the Eastern-Pacific (EP) type and the Central-Pacific (CP) type. Ocean temperature anomalies in the upper 100 m are averaged over the eastern (80°W–90°W, 5°S–5°N) and central (160°E–150°W, 5°S–5°N) equatorial Pacific to construct the EP and CP sub...
متن کاملImpact of El Niño onset timing on the Indian Ocean: Pacific coupling and subsequent El Niño evolution
A relation between the timing of the El Niño onset and its subsequent evolution is examined by emphasizing its association with the Indian Ocean (IO) SST variation. Two types of El Niño events based on the timing of their onset are classified and their characteristics are examined and compared. In general, spring onset (SP) events grow greater in magnitude and their evolutions have a faster tra...
متن کاملEl Niño–Southern Oscillation: Magnitudes and asymmetry
[1] The alternating warm/cold phenomena in the Pacific, known as El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), is characterized by large perturbations to the worldwide climate. Indices have been defined to characterize this phenomenon. However, the commonly used indices contain an unwanted effect from the annual cycle that can be reduced by digital filtering. Using a filtered ENSO index NL on data from ...
